How To Hide A Turkey - Kids Book And Craft Ideas

Thanksgiving will be here soon, it’s time to read all the turkey books and do fun crafts with your little ones! This book by Scholastic “How To Hide A Turkey” is an adorable story about showing kindness to all, building friendships, and helping a Turkey find his way home. The illustrations are so cute and the sing song rhyming makes it so entertaining!

The book even includes craft ideas and instructions on how to disguise yourself as a Turkey, that kids will enjoy making and it will bring so much laughter and fun! I also recommend this printable, so your little ones can make their own disguised turkeys! This book is excellent in teaching too, as it gives little facts about turkeys, as well as the history of Thanksgiving and why we celebrate.

Definitely check it out! You can find “How To Hide A Turkey” available for purchase on Amazon or in a book store near you.

Quick and Easy Homemade Pumpkin Pie

On behalf of Pi Day, I figured I'd share my very first homemade Pumpkin Pie, made from scratch! I made this awhile back, for Thanksgiving, (the only time of year I eat Pumpkin Pie 😄) and I think it turned out pretty good!

Days before I started, I cooked a pumpkin in the oven, to get the insides all soft and mushy. I prepared an easy pie crust with the following ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 Cup of Flour
  • 1 tsp of Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp of Salt
  • 1/2 Cup of Cold Butter Chopped Up
  • 3 TBS of Cold Water

Mix all of the ingredients together until it forms a nice ball of dough. Once combined, wrap dough and chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes. While the dough is chilling, begin making your pumpkin pie filling. To do this, mix together the following ingredients:

  • 3 Eggs
  • 2 Cups of Pureed Pumpkin
  • 1 Cup of Heavy Cream
  • 1 tsp of Vanilla Extract
  • 3/4 Cup of Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp of Salt
  • 2 tsp of Cinnamon

When all the pie filling ingredients were combined, I took the dough from the fridge and shaped a crust into the greased pie pan. You can roll the ball and flatten it on the counter top, with some extra flour, but I was in a hurry so I just shaped it in the pan. This worked just fine! It may not have come out as pretty but crimping the edges with a fork helped :-)

Once the crust was ready, I used a fork to poke around inside and then poured the pie filling into the (still unbaked) crust. I then baked this at 425° for 15-20 minutes, then reduced the temperature to 350° and continued to cook the pie for 50-60 minutes. Once baked all the way through, I removed the pie from the oven and let it cool.

I then fridged the pie over night, for our Thanksgiving celebration the next day! It tasted just like a pumpkin pie should, although I think next time I would like the crust slightly sweeter and a little thinner. This pie tastes delicious on its own, cold, or warmed with with a dollop or two of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!

Holiday Decor on a Budget : Thanksgiving Style

If you like to decorate for the Holidays, but hate spending tons of money on items that only gets used one month out of the year, or maybe cant quite afford the price of decor...I totally get it. It's costly and takes up space for the other 11 months that it is not being used. Because of this, I try to use what I have on hand, to make my holiday decor, or I look for items that can be reused, fit more holidays than just one, and also fit the budget! So I will share with you a list of budget friendly ideas to decorate for the holidays.

* Make a diy Thanksgiving Garland using only what you have on hand. Check out what I made here, and it didn't cost me a thing.

* Use brown paper bags as table coverings or place-mats for the kids to draw hand turkeys on. Doubles as decor and fun!

* Frame up some free printables to match the holiday theme. A few places you can find them are at: How To Nest For Less, Juggling Act Mama, and Today's Fabulous Finds just to name a few.

* Forage in the great outdoors for leaves and branches that can be dried out and used as decor. Branches work great in a jar or vase, and dried leaves can be used to make garlands, table decor, and more!

* Hunt for the best deals! I am part of several Facebook Groups that share deals on holiday decor and more, so you really can get up to 90% off on some items, and save big time.

* And last but not least..purchase retail end of season decor on mega sales, to enjoy for the next year!

Have any tips you think I should add to this list? Feel free to drop me a comment and let me know!

Make a Thanksgiving Garland with What You Have on Hand

Rather than spending tons of money on Thanksgiving decor, I like to use what I have on hand to see what I can make! Of course I like to look for good deal items, but sometimes even those can be pricey. So I whipped together a Thanksgiving Garland using only what I had on hand.

I started with some thick brown card-stock paper, but really you can use any paper you like, even a brown paper bag! I cut the card-stock into the size and shape I wanted for my letters to be displayed on, and then got to painting. I used the color Magnolia White, but again you can do any color you like, and I painted a wispy design on them to kind of make a rustic look, then used black paint for the letters. You can decide whatever you want your garland to say... I went with "Be Thankful" because it's a great reminder for me to see everyday :)

Once the paint dried, I hooked some string across the wall and secured the squares with mini clothespins, (you could also use tape or paperclips) hung it up on the wall and walah! Thanksgiving Garland done and it didn't cost me a thing, accept for what I already had on hand!

Leftover Mashed Potato Pizza Crust

A great idea to use leftover mashed potatoes, is to turn them into a fantastic pizza crust! This past Thanksgiving, we had a plethora of leftover potatoes so I had the idea to make a pizza. I came across this Potato Crust Pizza recipe from Home Cooking Adventure. It looked easy enough so I decided to give it a try. To make this crust, you need the following ingredients:

1 Egg
Flour as Needed
2 TBS of Vegetable Oil
3 Cups of Mashed Potatoes
1/2 Cup of Shredded Cheese (Your Choice)
Salt + Ground Pepper + Any other seasonings you may like

Preheat oven to 425 Degrees Fahrenheit
Mix all of the ingredients together, whisking egg first. Add in the flour as it is needed, to help thicken dough. Once everything is well mixed, you can begin to spread out the potato mixture on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until it has a nice golden brown tint to it.

Once it looks complete, begin placing your pizza toppings on! I used BBQ Sauce, pepperoni, ham, and Pepper-jack Cheese on mine. It was delicious! I couldn't believe how well potatoes made a pizza crust. Definitely a recipe to keep on hand when you have an excessive amount of potatoes!

Hormel's Curemaster Reserve: Vermont Maple and Campfire Ham

Disclaimer: I received the following product(s) in exchange for my review. All opinions my own.

I recently had the opportunity to try Hormel's Curemaster Reserve Campfire Ham, Vermont Maple Ham, and their amazing glazes. Both of these hams arrive frozen, precooked and presliced, so when you're ready to serve dinner to your family, the hams take a fraction of the normal cooking time! And everything is there for you, with easy to follow directions, and three different sauces to choose from. This is so great, especially for big holiday get togethers!

The Campfire Ham is by far the best ham I have ever tasted. It was so easy to cook and the Cranberry Chipotle Glaze made the flavor spectacular. The ham was tender and juicy in all the right ways and it gave off a very delicious aroma. I loved that the ham was precooked and presliced, making it such a time saver! If you're looking for the perfect ham for the holidays, I definitely recommend this one!

The Vermont Maple Ham was very tender and juicy, releasing all the flavors to make a delicious main course. I used the Honey Dijon Glaze but I think the Cranberry Chipotle Glaze would have been a better choice. The Dijon flavor was very strong and didn't quite mesh well with the Maple flavor. It did give the ham a great glaze and color though!

If you're on the hunt for a delicious and easy to cook ham, I highly recommend the Hormel's Curemaster Reserve Hams. They are perfect for holidays, family dinner nights, or even when you're just craving a juicy ham. Check your lcoal stores for these products, and visit hormel.com for more information and products.

I received a complimentary product in exchange for my honest review. All opinions my own.
