Growing Green Onions From Kitchen Scraps

   Did you know that you can take the ends of store bought green onions and plant them in a little soil or water, to regrow them for future eating? It happens so quick too! In just a few days, those little white roots start sending up new green shoots, and suddenly you’ve got yourself a new supply of scallions for soups, stir-fries, baked potato toppings and more! I recently did this with mine, by planting them in soil and keeping them in a pot on the kitchen counter... they are growing wild!

   But I am curious what happens if I don’t keep cutting the green onions down. So I had to look into this and thought I'd share.

   Apparently if you stop harvesting the greens, your onion plants will keep maturing. I thought they would eventually grow too tall, fall over, and die. But actually after some time, they’ll send up a tall flower stalk topped with a beautiful round ball of tiny white blossoms. At that point, the plant’s energy goes into making seeds. Then those seeds can be saved and planted, so you can start fresh onions from scratch! I will have to try that, but first, I need to harvest them for dinner haha.

*A Few Tips to Keep the Harvest Going:

• Snip the greens about an inch above the base and they’ll regrow.
• Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and give them plenty of sunlight.
• After a few rounds of cutting, the greens may get thinner. When that happens, it's time to plant a new batch from store bought onions, or seeds you've harvested from the first batch.

   If you have a lot of weeds in your yard or want a fun way to water your plants, the Chapin 26021XP ProSeries Multi-Purpose Tank Sprayer is an awesome tool to use! It has a 2 gallon tank with a 48” hose and a 20” wand for easy use. You can fill the tank with any liquid, made for weeds, pesticides, fertilizer, water, ect. but nothing too strong so no solvents or oil-based sealers.    

   I like to use a homemade weed killer solution in this sprayer, as it’s much safer for the environment! I just add in the liquid, screw the lid back on, pump the handle a few times to get it going, and the liquid is ready to release from the spray wand! There is even a release knob on the side, in case too much pressure is built up inside the tank. 

   The hose and handle feel great in the hand as it was ergonomically designed and you can really feel the effort put into this as it holds comfortably! Easy Recipe For A DIY Weed Killer

    Spring and Summer is a beautiful time of year, but it brings weeds like crazy! Our current backyard has rock landscaping, and it grows back weeds no matter how often I pull them up! I wanted to find something to help kill off the weeds a little, so I'm not having to pull them as often. After some research on natural products, I decided to make up a recipe with products I had on hand. Salt, Vinegar, Dish Soap, and Hot Water are all products that will aid in destroying weeds, and hopefully discourage them from regrowing. I only recommend doing this an in area where you do not plan on growing anything, as it could taint the soil for future growth. 

   In a spray bottle, I mixed half hot water, half vinegar, a heaping amount of salt, and some drizzles of dish soap. I shook the bottle until everything mixed together and dissolved, than began spraying on the weeds in my gravel. Keep in mind, this takes a lot of solution, and you have to be consistent with it until the weeds die up. You will see the solution working after a day or two, the weeds will start turning yellow and shrivel up. This will make them easier to pull out of the ground as well! Make sure you stay consistent, as it is a more natural substance so it doesn't work like chemicalized weed killers, but it is much safer for you and the environment.

Today we saved a Bee!

   I was in the garage and noticed a bug on the floor...which I was ready to squish because I thought it was a spider! I had my son grab the flashlight so I could take a better look at it, and I noticed it was a little bee, just laying there. I put a clear cup over it (so it couldn't fly at my face and sting me lol) and I also wanted to see if it was even still alive. The little guy slowly started walking around, so I slipped a piece of paper under the cup and my son carried it to our backyard. We set it down, removing the cup so it could go where it wanted. The bee started crawling, but then tipping over and falling everywhere. I quickly made it a small bowl of sugar water and the next few happenings were amazing! It crawled right up to the bowl and started drinking. I saw its tongue out and everything haha. It drank for a good minute, and then crawled onto a piece of moss next to it.

   My son brought over some flowers from the Mexican Orange Bush we have in the corner of our yard, and the bee knew just what to do. Crawl on them, give himself a good clean, and rest. He sat there for a good amount of time, maybe 15 minutes or so. Then he crawled to the top of the flowers and acted as if he was King of the Garden. Then flew away! I guess the lil guy just need some good TLC and that sugar water helped clean him right up. It was so fascinating watching the bee and feeling those good feelings inside, that we helped him survive. Now he can go pollinate flowers and bring good to the world!

     Growing indoor mushrooms has been a breeze, using the Back to the Roots Organic Mushroom Mini Growing Kit! It only took a couple days to start seeing growth. At first, the little fungi looked really creepy and disgusting, because it seemed like giant mold spores were growing...but the three days later, the mushrooms really started taking on their form! After just over a week, the mushrooms were ready to be harvested and they gave me quite a bit! This has been a really fun kit to try, and amazed me with how fast the growth happened. I decided to see if I could get another harvest from the other side! I will update in about a week! :)

They are heavy duty, arriving in a carrying case that comes with a strap for the binoculars, a cleaning cloth, and directions. The binoculars are easy to use, and each lens cap easily comes off for quick use. It took me a bit to get the lens to focus, but I was amazed with how far away I can see through these.

They are really great for bird watching and travel. My son loves to look through binoculars so he's been having all kinds of fun testing these ones out. They are the best we've tried yet! The little Porlien Gold Accent Floral Porcelain Spoons are adorable and would be the perfect accessory to a mini tea party! They are made of a fine porcelain and the artwork is beautifully done in quite detail.

The tips on the handle of the spoons are flashed with gold streaks giving it a fancier touch, and there are holes in the handle so you can put little hooks on them. Maybe little ribbons with a tag or note. There are so many ideas to use the spoons in a tea party. They are beautiful and would also make a sweet gift. The spoons arrive in a nice little gift box, but my box had a horrid scent to it, like something that would have been lying in a musty attic for years. It smelled strong of mildew, but everything looked clean. Other than the smell, these tiny spoons are great, though seem more decorative than useful.
